Cat, Crumbs, and Calculations: My Midnight Numerology Ritual

12:34

I like seeing 12:34 when I look at a clock.

I’m usually quite busy around noon, so this auspicious event tends to happen when I’m sneaking in my midnight snack.

The four consecutive integers (1,2,3,4) convey to me a sense of organic progress and advancement; 1, 2, 3, 4… I, II, II, IV… A, B, C, D… x, xx, xxx, xxxx… y, yy, yyy, yyyy…

Furthermore, summing each integer (1+2+3+4) gives us 10, the base of the decimal system and the “most perfect number” in esoteric thought; a symbol of wholeness, unity, completion and success.

12:34: Always forward towards wholeness.

The path is not linear, but it’s the direction that matters.

Now, as you can see by my unpredictable posting schedule, I sometimes get lost in the process (and in the juggling of my responsibilities) rather than following a consistent, “united” path. But I always keep moving forward, so this symbolism is a welcome reminder for me.

My take on numerology

We are here in the realm of numerology (or arithmancy); a wide range of practices present throughout history, which are concerned with ascribing meaning to numbers and mathematical operations with the goal of describing someone’s life and personality (e.g.: summing/digital root of birthdates and names), predicting the future (e.g.: Terence McKenna’s Timewave Zero program) and answering questions (e.g.: numbers of tarot cards).

But I don’t believe in divination or in the predictive aspects of numerology per se.

I don’t believe in a causal relationship between seeing 12:34 and me advancing on the right path towards success and meaning.

Instead, in the spirit of esoteric correspondences, I see this number as an external reflection of my inner world, a reminder, an anchor, I have created to ask myself “Am I progressing in the right direction?”

No matter what happens, every clock in the world will remind every human of 12:34 twice a day.

This is neither a synchronicity nor a causal factor; simply an external stimulus to which I have consciously given the meaning of reminding me to check-in on my progress towards my ideals.

It’s an opportunity for me to check-in with myself as I bite into a sandwich around midnight, my cat staring at me with judgment in his eyes.

“What did I do well today, and what can I adjust to progress even better towards my goals?”

“What, or who, am I taking for granted in my journey, and what, or who, am I grateful for?”

Nothing too intense, but it’s always good to take a minute and re-calibrate your mind.

I clean up the counter and make my way beside the little critter, sitting in front of his favorite window. He’s looking at a squirrel outside.

Well, looks like he’s got his goals in mind as well!

I go for a little pat on his head as we look into the peaceful night, but end up dodging the last tap of the day.

Time to go to bed.

Now what?

Thanks to the astronomers, mathematicians and watchmakers of old, I have found a way to let the movement of the Earth symbolically remind me of my intentions twice a day.

Different numbers or sequences may resonate with different people, like angel numbers (e.g.: 777, 888 etc.), 00:00, 11:11, or even 4:20 for my fellow druids.

So it boils down to two questions: What intentions do you want to be reminded about, and what symbols or events of everyday life (numerological or not) could help you do just that?

This is the power of correspondences and of the imagination.

This is what “magick” is all about; holding both reason and imagination as interconnected equals, with the objective of them mutually supporting each other for the advancement of your concrete goals.

Safe Journey.
